Larimar, a welcoming cat (Cat poem)

The cat with a welcome

Larimar. a welcoming cat

If you are a stranger,
You are in no danger,
If to our house, you decide to come and call.
But I must let you know,
If in our house, you go,
You will be greeted with delight in our hall.

For Larimar, our cat,
Will dash out for a chat,
Meowing at you until you give him a stroke.
He expects it from you,
So it’s best if you do,
Otherwise at your leg, his paw will soon poke.

He’s really not too bad,
It’s just that he’s so glad
To have someone new he can come out and greet.
If you do not want all that,
A big fuss from our cat,
It’ll be safer if you stay out on the street.

Willow, the riverside cat (Cat poem)

The cat that swims

Willow, the riverside cat

Willow, who has lived by the riverside since her birth,
Makes her way carefully through the tall riverside grass.
Stepping nimbly around that patch of wet sticky earth,
She spots the river, reflecting the sunlight like glass.

Carefully she dips a front paw into the river,
Confirming to her that it is running nice and slow.
With her fur coat ensuring that she will not shiver,
She begins swimming across the rivers gentle flow.

For there’s a picnic area over on that side,
It’s a place where rich pickings can usually be found.
If there are dogs, there are many places she can hide,
Ready to sneak out and take what’s dropped to the ground.

She’s in luck! For a barbecue took place there last night,
And there are some good quality scraps for her to eat.
Once she has had her fill, she swims back home in delight,
Back to her garden, seeking out her favourite seat.

Her fur is soon drying under the warm summer sun,
She licks it back into its uttermost perfection.
Feeling so tired from all of this hard work she has done,
She curls up neatly for some sleep, rest, and reflection.

The Neighbour’s Garden (Cat poem)

Topsy’s gone exploring

The Neighbour’s Garden

So adorable and sweet,
Topsy’s walking down the street,
Her small paws placed carefully on the ground.
She had found an open door,
So has gone out to explore,
Wondering just what there was to be found.

Coming to the neighbours’ gate,
She has a short debate,
Curiosity won, so in she strolled.
A place she has never been,
There are new plants to be seen,
And a statue, looking weathered and old.

Keen to see what was beyond,
She discovers a round pond,
With some fishes swimming everywhere.
She hears her name being called,
But she is far too enthralled,
Watching the fishes swimming here and there.

The neighbour could hear their shout,
And decided to look out,
Spotting her in his garden, so carefree.
With a smile he went to her,
Picked up this bundle of fur,
And took her back home to where she should be.

Topsy and Turvey (Cat poem)

Living with 2 kittens

Topsy and Turney

Topsy and Turvey, kittens turning your world upside down,
Although they will bring to you a smile, much more than a frown.
Jumping on and off your lap, playing all their chasing game,
And you are never quite sure which one will answer which name.
But when one of them comes and settles on your lap to sleep,
Their purring reminds you why your patience, with them, you keep.

They are there for you at the start of every new day,
So eager for their breakfast, before going off to play.
They will come up to you for their stroke, when they feel the need,
And become so attentive, when it’s time for their next feed.
When you arrive home they may be sound asleep on your chair,
But they will soon wake up for more play, letting you sit there.

Box to Box (cat poem)

The danger of leaving a box empty near a cat

Box to Box

This box is just the right size for me,
A good place to rest after my tea.
I shall sleep in it, out here in the hall,
Curling up tightly into a ball.
Although a quick wash I must first do,
Before I sink in here, out of your view.

What do you mean by disturbing my sleep?
I found this box, it is mine to keep!
You can’t have it back for at least an hour,
Watch out, for my mood is turning sour.
I’m not pleased with you, no more will I purr,
You may find a claw if you touch my fur.

Why have you placed a second box just there?
I have no plans of moving anywhere!
I can see you’re putting in there, a treat,
A few tasty biscuits for me to eat.
Maybe I will choose to move out that way,
This box is yours, I don’t need it today.

What is a cat? (Cat poem)

Introduction to cats

What is a cat?

A cat is a creature covered in fur,
Captivating us humans with its purr.
It can be loving when it wants to be,
To give it a stoke, brings us harmony.
Upon our laps it will settle to sleep.
A loving creature is a cat to keep.

However, it is on the cats’ terms alone,
That its affection for us is ever shown.
It rules the home and decides just what to do,
And when it chooses too, it will ignore you.
It will sleep where it wants, then best left in peace,
As for its meals, it will insist on a feast!

Just why do we let our cats treat us so?
I am not sure that I will ever know.
Perhaps it is the way it makes me feel,
When it comes for a stroke after its meal.
The way its presence eases my strife,
When it comes to cats, I am hooked for life.

Lily-Low’s visit to the vet (cat poem)

Coping with a reluctant cat

Lily-Low’s visit to the vet

Come Lily-Low,
It’s time to go,
There’s really no need to put on such a show.
Please get in here,
Lily-Low dear,
You usually climb in when boxes appear.
Don’t run away,
Be good this day,
It will not be too long in there you will stay.

Oh, do get in!
You cannot win,
Stop trying to hide behind the kitchen bin.
I’ve got you now,
Stop that meow,
I will get this lid shut on the box, somehow.
At last, it’s done,
The lid has won
Now we’re at the vets, the check-up has begun.

We’re home once more,
Back through the door,
Just let me put your box down onto the floor.
Out you can get,
There’s no more vet,
See, there was no reason to get so upset.
Now let me be,
Can you not see,
That I’m exhausted and need my cup of tea.

Cat burglar – the open window (Cat poem)

An open window, irresistible for a cat!

Cat burglar – the open window

They have left the window open! Have they all gone off to sleep?
Along the wall in perfect silence, his four paws slowly creep.
The smell of cooked chicken is floating out upon the air,
Telling him, quite clearly, that there is food for him in there.
Getting closer to the window, they have left it open wide!
With perfect elegance, he quietly climbs through inside.

Pausing in perfect stillness, he listens for any sound,
His cat senses tell him that there’s nothing moving around.
The chicken must be somewhere, left over from the barbecue,
Surely, very soon, his searching must bring it into view.
Ah! It’s on the table in a box, they have left off the lid!
He jumps upon the table top, but then he starts to skid.

Sliding along on a plastic plate, he hits the chicken fast,
Scattering it everywhere, and making quite a blast.
Then from upstairs he can hear people beginning to shout,
It’s time to cut his losses, and scrambles rapidly to get out.
Safely out the window he runs along the wall in retreat,
However he did manage to get a chicken wing to eat.

A Soft Comfy Drawer (cat poem)

A comfy place to sleep

A Soft Comfy Drawer

The Purrfect sleeping place, this drawer’s just right for me,
Clearly designed for a cat, I am sure you will agree.
It comes with space to curl up and a soft comfy floor,
And there would be no breeze, if you would please close the door.
There are jumpers each side, so there is comfort all round,
I will soon be fast asleep in here, all safe and sound.

What’s that? You now want to use it! Please wait just a while,
Let me start purring for you and I will make you smile.
Just for a few more minutes, please can I finish my sleep?
Then I will remove myself and it will be yours to keep.
Well, at least until my next rest time, around about one,
So if you could please leave it open, once you are done.

Bobby is out on his beat (cat poem)

Bobby has his night time duties to perform

Bobby is out on his beat

Bobby is out on his beat,
Walking quietly down the street,
The sun has now set and the dark night has come to call.
It is time to look around,
And see what can now be found,
So for a better view, he jumps up on the neighbours wall.

If their dog has gone to bed,
Then he can jump to their shed.
He glances in their garden, but the dog is nowhere in sight.
So, with a swish of his tail,
Through the darkness he sets sail,
Landing silently, he stops to see what’s moving in the night.

A shadow sweeps from up high,
As an owl goes flying by,
Swooping down into the garden, hunting for a meal to eat,
There is a noise by the house,
It is time to chase a mouse!
But it escapes Bobby by running behind the garden seat.

Crossing the road in the dark,
Something’s changed in the park!
What’s been happening while he’s been off-duty sound asleep?
There are tools laying around,
And a large hole can be found,
The path has been dug up, leaving behind a muddy heap!

It is getting near to dawn,
So, with a stretch and a yawn,
It is time to come off-duty from all his investigating.
Going home he finds his meal,
Then, once he has had his fill,
He washes his fur and strolls off to where his bed is waiting.
