The First Ripples of Autumn (poem)

The First Ripples of Autumn

Summer is fading a little bit more each day,
As the ripples of autumn begin to spread near.
From the tips of leaves, the greens start fading away,
The reds and yellows of autumn start to appear.

The birds of summer are on their migration,
Heading for warmer lands, until winter departs.
Squirrels are gathering nuts for hibernation,
Preparing for their long sleep, once winter starts.

Autumn will begin to reach out its frosty hand,
Touching the edges of dawn, after a cold night.
A sparking whiteness covering all the land,
Within autumns first chillness, a beautiful sight.

Autumn colours are putting on their brightest show,
Upon a breeze, the leaves begin to tumble down.
The leaves of summer, scattered on the ground below,
Gaps of winter showing in autumns golden crown.

Autumns falling crown (poem)

Autumns falling crown

Autumns falling crown, leaves tumbling down.
A new covering for the ground below.
A gentle wind blows, another leaf goes,
Wrapped in shades of red, orange, and yellow.

The sway of a tree, sets some more leaves free,
Releasing summers glory to the sky.
Some glide through the air, others flutter there,
Some spin when a gust of wind passes by.

The trees release more, falling to the floor,
Until beneath our feet, the leaves all lay.
The trees surrender their autumn splendour,
Before the frosts of winter come their way.

The sun’s heading south for winter (poem)

The sun’s heading south for winter

The sun’s heading south for its winter break,
It’s crossing the equator about now.
Leaving the crops of summer in its wake,
As they disappear under autumns plough.

There’s now a slight chill in the air at dawn,
The curtains closing earlier each night.
There’s no sign yet of the frost on the lawn,
But it won’t be long until it’s in sight.

The window’s open for a while at noon,
As the sun throws back the last of its heat.
You can tell that autumn will be here soon,
But you are glad for that last summer treat.

Gardens are trimmed before winters cold breath.
Summers items packed away for the year.
Autumns landscape looks a little bereft,
With the hint that winter is getting near.

The sun leaves behind a land going bare.
But also leaves a promise as it goes.
For some green shoots of spring are hiding there,
Kept warm by the autumn leaves and hedgerows.

A frosty early autumn dawn (poem)

A frosty early autumn dawn

The morning sun is rolling across the windowsill,
Nice and bright, but I can see outside there’s been a chill.
Frost has landed upon the lawn during this cold night,
Glistening in the early sun, autumns dawn delight.
Resting on the branches and decorating the wall,
Announcing on this dawn that autumn has come to call.

Putting on my old boots, I shall take a walk outside,
Just a gentle stroll, for it’s far too early to stride.
Leaving my footprints behind me as I wander pass,
The creatures of the night have left their own in the grass.
Upon a frosty branch a robin begins to sing,
The hibernators will soon be sleeping through to spring.

The leaves upon the trees glisten in the rising sun,
The change to their autumn shades has already begun.
This first frost will seal their fate, the trees will let them go,
Floating down to the ground, or to where the wind may blow.
The frost is now melting on this early autumn day,
Soon it will linger longer, now winters on its way.

Summer’s first hints of Autumn (poem)

Summer’s first hints of Autumn

Summer’s first hints of autumn are appearing,
There’s just a leaf or two dropping here and there.
Showing to us that autumn time is nearing,
It feels just a little cooler in the air.

The daytime is now slowly decreasing,
The sun is spending less time in the sky.
The night time is now slowly increasing,
With the evening stars once more seen up high.

Squirrels start to seek nuts for hibernating,
Racing around the branches of the trees.
Birds have started to think about migrating,
To warmer places over the land and seas.

Some summer flowers are fading from sight,
As their bright colours slowly disappear.
But others will wait for autumn’s first bite,
And keep going until the frost gets here.

Summers first hint of autumn is in the air,
As nature starts releasing summers warm glow.
A time for the world of nature to prepare,
For whatever the winter may put on show.

An Autumn Rose (poem)

An Autumn Rose

An autumn rose, such a sweet delight,
Blossoming as summer is fading from sight.
Its tender petals, defying the coldness,
Summer’s beauty living within its boldness.
In the autumn breeze, the rose gently sways,
A touch of colour for the darkening days.
Nature’s lost summer still there for us to see,
Beauty’s last glance before winter is set free.
It’s autumn splendour now fading for the year,
Until the spring, when the new buds will appear.

Late summer gardening (poem)

Late summer gardening

Summer’s nearly over, there’s a chill coming to the night,
I can see the garden flowers are not looking quite so bright.
It’s time to get some garden tools and take a look around,
Before the leaves start falling, moving summer to the ground.

There’s a tree that needs trimming, some branches are far too long,
But I’ll leave plenty, upon which the birds can sing their song.
The roses need cutting, their blossoms are fading away,
Although some still carry the scent of a fragrant summers day.

I can see some weeds need clearing from the corner flowerbed,
One rose I will leave alone, whilst its flowers shine bright red.
The bushes need clipping, removing a branch just here & there,
Oops, I’d better get started, or I’ll never get anywhere!

At last it’s all done! I will pick some blackberries to eat,
And go and take a well-earned rest upon the garden seat.
Then from all these cuttings, I will create a tidy heap,
To make a winter home, where the hedgehogs can go to sleep.
