The playground awakens (poem)

Let the children play

The playground awakens

The playground stands empty, silent, and a little forlorn,
Waiting there for the sunrise to bring with it a new dawn.
Throughout the darkness of the night the playground has laid bare,
It’s swings and roundabouts, in stillness, have been resting there.
Some creatures of the night have travelled through it, once or twice,
A fox, two hedgehogs, and alongside its hedgerows, some mice.

The sun creeps above the horizon, chasing off the night,
On the top of the slide, it deposits dawns early light.
Sliding down it slowly, it reaches over to the swings.
On top of the climbing frame, a robin lands and sings.
A new day has begun, dawns sunlight spread everywhere,
Announcing to all the world that the playground is still there.

Its does not wait too long before the first children arrive,
Its swings and roundabouts, once more, become alive.
The sound of laughter breaks the silence the night left behind,
With the children racing around to see what they can find.
In the playing of their games, new friends they begin to make,
Fun and happiness are found, now the playground is awake.

Secret dens and Pirate ships (poem)

Children games in the park

Secret dens and Pirate ships

In the bushes beside the park fence there’s a ‘secret den’,
– Although if you know where to look, it’s easy to see.
Currently it’s a place of adventure for some children,
Playing as secret agents, under its canopy.
On the park bench their parents listen as they play,
They are searching for ‘the baddies’, laughing as they do.
Then silence descends as they find a ‘new secret way’,
To crawl along, bringing them back into their parents view.

Alongside the park there’s a stream where the ducks float,
Waiting eagerly for bread that the children might throw.
Two children arrive at its side carrying their toy boat,
Setting it down upon the stream, it sails off in full flow.
To them it is a Pirate ship sailing the seven seas,
Ready to find buried treasure upon some distant shore.
‘Land ahoy’ they cry as it stops in the bend by the trees,
Picking it up, they go back and set it sailing once more.
