A blank piece of paper (poem)

A place for the imagination

A blank piece of paper

A blank piece of paper sitting there in front of you,
Revealing nothing, but with so much there you can do.
A place you can write or draw, the choice is yours this day,
Just pick up a pen or pencil and doddle away!
It doesn’t have to make sense, just release what’s in your mind,
It’s amazing what’s in there, waiting for you to find.
Perhaps just a few squiggles, to the top or to the side,
Or slap bang in the middle, a circle can reside.

Some words could be written, whatever comes into your head,
You could write them backwards, or upside-down instead.
Once you start writing, more words may start to come along
Who knows, you could even end up writing a new song.
You could add in a drawing, fill up an empty space,
Lots of little doddles going all over the place.
When you have done and there’s nothing left you want to try,
You could make a paper aeroplane and let it fly.

Cat burglar – the open window (Cat poem)

An open window, irresistible for a cat!

Cat burglar – the open window

They have left the window open! Have they all gone off to sleep?
Along the wall in perfect silence, his four paws slowly creep.
The smell of cooked chicken is floating out upon the air,
Telling him, quite clearly, that there is food for him in there.
Getting closer to the window, they have left it open wide!
With perfect elegance, he quietly climbs through inside.

Pausing in perfect stillness, he listens for any sound,
His cat senses tell him that there’s nothing moving around.
The chicken must be somewhere, left over from the barbecue,
Surely, very soon, his searching must bring it into view.
Ah! It’s on the table in a box, they have left off the lid!
He jumps upon the table top, but then he starts to skid.

Sliding along on a plastic plate, he hits the chicken fast,
Scattering it everywhere, and making quite a blast.
Then from upstairs he can hear people beginning to shout,
It’s time to cut his losses, and scrambles rapidly to get out.
Safely out the window he runs along the wall in retreat,
However he did manage to get a chicken wing to eat.

Bobby is out on his beat (cat poem)

Bobby has his night time duties to perform

Bobby is out on his beat

Bobby is out on his beat,
Walking quietly down the street,
The sun has now set and the dark night has come to call.
It is time to look around,
And see what can now be found,
So for a better view, he jumps up on the neighbours wall.

If their dog has gone to bed,
Then he can jump to their shed.
He glances in their garden, but the dog is nowhere in sight.
So, with a swish of his tail,
Through the darkness he sets sail,
Landing silently, he stops to see what’s moving in the night.

A shadow sweeps from up high,
As an owl goes flying by,
Swooping down into the garden, hunting for a meal to eat,
There is a noise by the house,
It is time to chase a mouse!
But it escapes Bobby by running behind the garden seat.

Crossing the road in the dark,
Something’s changed in the park!
What’s been happening while he’s been off-duty sound asleep?
There are tools laying around,
And a large hole can be found,
The path has been dug up, leaving behind a muddy heap!

It is getting near to dawn,
So, with a stretch and a yawn,
It is time to come off-duty from all his investigating.
Going home he finds his meal,
Then, once he has had his fill,
He washes his fur and strolls off to where his bed is waiting.

Lewy, the library cat (cat poem)

The library can’t survive without him

Lewy, the library cat

Lewy is the cat who calls the library his home,
His knows where each book on every shelf is found.
Down every corridor he will frequently roam,
That you’ll soon get used to seeing him walking around.

A box has arrived, there are new books to discover!
So he climbs in, for they all need to be inspected.
Carefully he examines each book by its cover,
Just in case any of them need to be rejected.

There is a stack of books waiting to be put away,
So he sits on them and meows to make you aware,
That you should be sorting them all out today,
Rather than drinking coffee, sitting in your chair.

He will escort you to where each of the books must go,
Staying close by your side as you push the trolley along.
For it is part of his job to make sure that you know,
Exactly where upon the bookshelf the books belong.

Secret dens and Pirate ships (poem)

Children games in the park

Secret dens and Pirate ships

In the bushes beside the park fence there’s a ‘secret den’,
– Although if you know where to look, it’s easy to see.
Currently it’s a place of adventure for some children,
Playing as secret agents, under its canopy.
On the park bench their parents listen as they play,
They are searching for ‘the baddies’, laughing as they do.
Then silence descends as they find a ‘new secret way’,
To crawl along, bringing them back into their parents view.

Alongside the park there’s a stream where the ducks float,
Waiting eagerly for bread that the children might throw.
Two children arrive at its side carrying their toy boat,
Setting it down upon the stream, it sails off in full flow.
To them it is a Pirate ship sailing the seven seas,
Ready to find buried treasure upon some distant shore.
‘Land ahoy’ they cry as it stops in the bend by the trees,
Picking it up, they go back and set it sailing once more.

The Cat in the night (Cat poem)

A nighttime stroll!

The cat in the night

Moving silently through the deep dark night,
A suit of pure black with four boots of white.
A white tuxedo to finish her off to perfection,
A beautiful sight in the moonlights reflection.

Quietly she strolls through the garden deep,
Whilst the world around her is fast asleep.
Then through the door that is only for her,
She enters the house without causing a stir.

Upon the bed she settles down with a yawn,
To sleep in contentment until the new dawn,
Until her staff awake and see that she’s there.
To give her a stroke and show that they care.

Sitting on the fence (Cat poem)

An indecisive cat!

Sitting on the fence

Sitting on the fence, the cat casually looks around,
Should he stay up here, or go back down to the ground?
The sun is pleasant and he has enjoyed the view,
However, he can sense, that a cat nap is due.
He has been working quite hard, watching birds fly pass,
So now all he needs, is a nice patch of soft grass.

Sitting on the fence, he simply cannot decide,
Into which of these gardens he now wants to reside?
Then, from behind him, he hears an opening door,
They are letting their dog into the garden once more!
Their dog’s old and harmless, but she can be such a pest!
So into the other garden, he descends, for his rest.

Once down from the fence, he seeks out the perfect spot,
Slightly in the shade, so he doesn’t get too hot!
His fur needs some attention, some cleaning required,
Washing from ear tips to tail, he’s now feeling quite tired.
Curling up in the grass, his tail touching his nose,
A final gentle purr, then off to sleep he goes.

The morning windowsill (cat poem)

Lily-Low’s morning routine

The morning windowsill

Upon the windowsill, Lily-Low seeks out that sunny spot,
Warm as the sun rises, but by noon it would be far too hot!
With breakfast now over, it’s time for her to wash and clean,
Meticulously, until there’s not a speck of dirt to be seen.
With pride, she admires her elegant coat of soft white fur,
With contentment, she settles down and begins to purr.

Her head resting upon her paws, she drifts slowly off to sleep,
When you want to go past then, with great stealth, you slowly creep.
She may just allow an occasional stroke upon her head,
Although if you disturb her, it will be her claw instead!
As the sun creeps higher, she wakes and stretches out her paws,
Then jumping off the windowsill, she wanders off outdoors.

Horatio the Hedgehog (poem for children)

Hedgehogs visiting my garden

A children’s guide to Hedgehogs

Horatio the Hedgehog

Horatio is a hedgehog,
Has gone hunting for food to eat,
Rummaging around the old log,
Digging the earth with his feet.
His nose is sniffing everywhere,
For in the darkness of the night,
They tell him the insects are there,
So he can find them without light.

Alongside the fence he walks,
Looking for a tasty treat,
Moving round the flower stalks,
He finds a worm to eat.
Then once he is fully fed,
He sees that dawn is on its way,
So returns to his cosy bed,
To sleep in peace through the day.

Coby is sleeping (cat poem)

A cat is in charge, even when asleep.

See his next poem:
Coby is Awake
(It has the same rhyming structure as this poem)

Coby is sleeping

Coby is sleeping, so we must go creeping,
Quietly around the house for now.
For if he awakes, such a noise he makes,
That all you will hear is his meow!

A cat he may be, but for our harmony,
I let him sleep for as long as he wants to.
I know that I give in, and I let him win,
I will admit he is in charge of what I do.

He can be at my feet, until I take a seat,
Then upon my lap he will stake his claim.
He will want to be fed, then curl up on the bed,
But without him life would not be the same.

He knows how to care, he is always there,
And his loving nature brightens my days.
He will start to purr, as I stroke his fur,
So I forgive him his arrogant ways.
