Walking in a storm (lighthearted poem)

16 May

Walking in a storm

I thought I would take a walk today, though I was not sure just where,
To give myself a change of scene, and to enjoy some nice fresh air.
The weather seemed fine this morning, but I did not check the forecast,
So how was I to know that this fine weather was never meant to last!
Though the park, out into the countryside, my steps were taking me,
There’s a woodland over the next hill that I would like to see.
As I turned my back upon the town, I did not see to know,
That clouds were creeping into view, ready to put on their show.

The first clue was the branches swaying gently, which at first was great,
A pleasant walk through this beautiful woodland, seemed to be my fate.
But the winds began to grow stronger, as from the cold north they blew,
Then the clouds came sweeping over, and swept the sun out of my view.
It was when the raindrops started, that I finally understood,
I should have checked the weather forecast, and worn my coat with its hood!
Raindrops tumble down in droves, I dashed for shelter under a tree,
But when the thunder roared, I knew it was not a safe place to be.

By then the winds were howling, it was so hard to fight their fierce blast,
I fought my way towards the woodland edge, hoping this storm would not last.
A crack of thunder came overhead, with such a bright flash of light,
That I was blinded for a while and froze there, fearful in my plight.
I then heard a crash nearby, and started running the other way,
And found myself falling in a ditch, I’m in a right mess today!
The water in there went rushing around me, I was soaked right through,
Next time I take a walk, I’ll check first what the weather wants to do!
